So many writers talk about human sorrows and joys, but so little attention they devote to our smaller brothers. This selection consists of literary examples that show the role of man in animal life and vice versa. We hope that these arguments will help you and enrich the "little case" of literary knowledge.
Animal love for people
- Leonid Andreev - “Kusaka”. Having started acquaintance with this work, you immediately begin to be indignant at how cruel people are in relation to animals. In the story, the author tells about the difficult life of Kusaki - a dog whose life was overshadowed by loneliness and indifference on the part of the owners. But once a little and surprisingly generous girl Lele manages to color the life of a dog with colors of love, care and attention. The heroine helped Kusaka to feel needed, to realize that she can serve people and be useful to them. The dog blossomed with all its soul, although sometimes it was also a little afraid of sudden touches. Too deep were the wounds on the soul from recent life. Only Lele managed to "fall in love" with the exhausted Kusak. But, unfortunately, the happy dog life ended as quickly as it began. The coming autumn has taken away hope for peace and happiness. Lelia left. Again, the animal is faced with the hardships of its former existence. And in order to at least somehow quench the rekindled feeling of longing and loneliness, the dog howled loudly and lingeringly. This example shows that animals experience resentment as acutely as humans.
- Chekhov - "Chestnut". From the first pages of the story, the author draws the image of Kashtanka - a small dog wandering in search of his master. When the dog realizes that the efforts are in vain, she lies down and falls asleep at some entrance, but soon wakes up from the impact of a door opened by some person. And so Kashtanka gets acquainted with his new master. And, as it seems, completely forgets about the former. Once in the other apartment, the dog realizes that it has acquired not only a new home, but also friends: a goose, a cat and a pig. They live, learning various circus numbers, because their owner himself works as a clown in a circus. During one of the performances, Kashtanka howls to the tune like a singer, and suddenly someone gasps in the hall, and then someone calls Kashtanka. It turned out that it was her last owner. The dog immediately runs up to him, enjoying the familiar smell of glue. That is what true devotion means! Despite the fact that Kashtanka had everything necessary for a good life, she could not forget her former master, his attention and love for her. And she even saw a circus, friends and a room with dirty wallpaper, like a heavy and not true dream. So great was her affection for Luke Alexandrovich. This example shows that sometimes a beast can be more noble than a person.
Animal cruelty
- Turgenev - “Mu-mu”. Surely everyone is familiar with this incredibly sad and heart-rending story. The life of the main character of the story - Gerasim, is not so simple, considering that he is deaf and dumb, that for many years of his life he gave work to a lady, that feelings for a woman he likes were spoiled by her in order to marry another. There must have been something among these hardships in which he could see joy. Mumu is a ray of hope and joy in the life of Gerasim. Once saved, the puppy turns into an obedient and affectionate favorite of the hero. Mum liked everyone, even the lady, but soon she changes her mind about the dog and orders her to get rid of it. Gerasim tried to sell the dog, but she still returned. Then he takes a boat, floats out in the middle of the river and drowns his only friend. Anyone who was ready to devote himself to Gerasim, forever disappeared from his life. So, we saw how the reluctance to understand and sympathize with other people leads to a series of events that not only negatively affect their participants, but also make victims of completely innocent and defenseless creatures of nature. In this work, the victims are both a dog who died at the hands of the owner, and Gerasim, who, because of his position, simply could not resist the order of an imperious and selfish lady. Thus, cruelty to the animal turned into a personal tragedy of man.
- Troepolsky - “White Bim Black Ear”. Bim, as the author writes, was born a “defective” puppy, not suitable for sale. The breeder wanted to get rid of the puppy, but the writer Ivan Ivanich, one of the main characters of the story, without thinking, took Bima to himself. The dog quickly got used to the hero, always subtly felt his mood and tried to do everything so that there was a smile on the face of the beloved master. Years passed, the long-standing injury of Ivan Ivanovich made itself felt, he was taken to the hospital. Since then, a long period of wanderings and searches for the owner has begun in the life of the dog. Someone who knew the dog tried to help him, wanted to return him home, and some characters, for example, Sery beat the dog with a stick, then Bim bit the man for the first time in his life, although before that no one could have expected such behavior. Another character is also recalled - neighbor Klim, who hit the dog in the chest because of his unwillingness to strangle a hare wounded in the hunt. Beam more than once had to face the manifestation of human cruelty, from which he tried to at least somehow defend himself. And although there were more good people who were able to provide assistance, but the traces of a rude attitude were forever remembered. According to the behavior and fate of the heroes, we see that violence towards an animal turns for them to a deterioration of character and degradation of the soul.
Animals as victims of human hands
- Bulgakov - "Dog Heart". The man in pursuit of the innovations of life has always sought to discover or create something new that would greatly simplify his existence. The elixir of eternal youth, immortality, beyond ability - all this is only a small part of what the “King of nature” would like to possess. But is there always a desire to go against the laws of the universe gives good results? In the story “Heart of a Dog”, Bulgakov clearly demonstrated that he can expect someone who wants to make his name in the history of science at the cost of life on Earth. In the center of the work is the affectionate and obedient dog Sharik, who after the operation performed on him turns into the Polygraph Sharikov with the habits of a drunkard and a thief (from whom the pituitary gland was borrowed for the operation). The effect was not long in coming, and as a result, the doctors received yet another poorly educated and problematic person, but in a new guise. Without thinking twice, they decide to have a second operation and return the dog to normal life. The problematic of this work, of course, lies in the human desire to “turn the mountains” of science, but is it worth making progress in this way? Indeed, animals that are not capable of self-defense often become experimental. Dog Sharik, unfortunately, has become one of them. Showing his fate, the author wants to warn the “King of Nature” from cruel and ethically unjustified experiments.
- Daniel Keyes - Flowers for Edgeron. Sadly and tragically, the fate of the little mouse Algeron, which we learn from the story of Keyes, has developed. His life becomes closely intertwined with the central hero of the story - Charlie Gordon, who, like Elgeron, is undergoing surgery to increase the level of intellectual abilities. Initially, in both cases, rapid mental development is observed, but as soon as it reaches its climax, the heroes quickly begin to regress, returning to the initial level of their abilities. In this work, we can say that both Charlie Gordon and Algeron are the victims. But if Charlie did it voluntarily, expecting any outcomes, then Algeron was just a material in the hands of people, because he simply could not realize and analyze his position because he was an animal. And there will be many more such Algerons taken for various experiments, but only as long as nature suffers all human attempts to change its laws.
