(324 words) Something mysterious, inexplicable and multifaceted lives in every person, a feeling so contradictory that it gives rise to both the most terrible thoughts and emotions, and the most beautiful that the human soul can feel. In Bunin’s story “Clean Monday,” we see a story of romantic love between two young people, but is it that simple? And in what incarnation does this insidious passion appear before the reader?
The heroes of the story are a beautiful girl and the narrator is a wealthy young man. But we do not know their names, therefore the images of the characters are blurred, and fade into the background, and their feelings for each other dominate. At first glance, the relationship of these people seems incomprehensible and strange. The narrator, together with his beloved, plunges into the world of idle life, he gives the girl good and expensive gifts, but she is cold about such signs of attention. The beauty loves her chosen one, but she is constantly detached from him, she does not see the future with him, which the young man so clearly represents. It creates the feeling of a barrier between the characters.
Indeed, their love is passionate, but superficial, there is no depth in it: the narrator tries to please her lover, surrounding her with empty luxury and not trying to look into her soul, to know her true desires, she soon understands the pettiness and insignificance of this blinding tinsel of social life - it's not her. The girl has to choose between a romantic attraction to a man and love of God. It takes a long time to solve, but it chooses the only way for itself: to go to the Martha-Mariinsky monastery. And she does this on a clean Monday, thereby forever freeing herself from worldly fuss. This is a decision that fully coincides with her spiritual aspirations, something that the protagonist could not see. Now we understand how different and incompatible the inner worlds of the characters are. However, having endured all the torment of love, the young man still comes to the realization and acceptance of the girl’s choice.
Bunin in his story showed us a non-trivial love story, there is no happy or terrible end, feelings are not exaggerated here, but they are complex, confused and unique, they are realistic. This could happen between two loving hearts in real life.
