“Quiet Don” is a wonderful work that every student must read, because it contains a lot of useful literary examples that will be useful in final exams. In this article, we retold the last book from the epic novel.
Part 6
Chapter 1. The upper and lower farms were divided, the first supported by the Reds, the second white. In late April 1918, the Reds left most of the Don, decided to convene the Army Circle. The delegates from the Tatarsky farm were Miron Grigoryevich, Pantelei Prokofievich and grandfather Bogatyryov. They go, discussing the Germans standing in Millerovo, the future power without the Bolsheviks and the fate of their sons. In this village they stopped. Miron G. first saw the Germans on the way to the store. They demand horses from him, promising that they can then be taken from the commandant. Having regretted giving the horses back, Korshunov decided to run, he hit his neighbor and rode off. A Cossack took refuge with a Ukrainian friend, promising him all sorts of benefits. Everything worked out, but the savior did not receive the promised gift, and Korshunov fled home. At this time, Pantelei Prokofievich received at the station a pass from the German, who belittled the Russians. Melekhov nevertheless drove to the meeting of the Circle. All delegates have little understanding of the situation, it is only clear that it is necessary to choose the chieftain. Especially they agitate for Krasnov, his opponent Bogaevsky is suspected of having connections with whites. The first was chosen by the military chieftain, he proposed laws, perelitsovannye from the royal. Pantelei Prokofievich left the congress, confident that Don was in good hands.
Chapter 2 The Don is troubled: the confrontation of whites, reds, and also Germans. A hundred Cossacks from the Tatar farm slowly followed the enemy, not hurrying to advance. Gregory and Christony kept the whole campaign close by. One day, the Cossacks rode, talked and joked, waiting for a stop for the night, which we stopped at Klyuchi Farm. And the next day, an order came to disband a hundred and follow into two other units. Before parting, Peter wanted to discuss with his brother an important topic - is not going to go to Gregory red. He himself does not understand what he needs, leaves the conversation. The next day, a hundred divided, under the leadership of the Melekhov brothers dispersed in different directions. Gregory thought about his brother's words, was silent. Half a hundred of him spent the night on a desert farm; he himself went to the apiary. Its owner talked with Melekhov about bees, watered the tea that his daughter was pouring. The woman’s husband left with the Reds, so in the beekeeper’s house, Grigory was met especially pleasantly. And the owner’s daughter generally called him to her at night. And Melekhov came to the yearning woman. The next morning, the Cossacks left. Meanwhile, Mishka Koshevy was sent to the front, but suddenly changed his mind and drove back. The Bolsheviks are not allowed to defend the Don, therefore Koshevoy is sent to serve as an atarschik (herd of horses). He goes to the service on his only horse. Having received the necessary instructions, Bear began to monitor two schools of horses. The senior atars soldier teaches his wisdom.
Chapter 3 Kosheva spent all days in the saddle. He was tormented by loneliness, he was looking for a company of a colleague. They talk about Bolshevism. The soldiers are explained, threatened to convey and crawls into a fight. Koshevo is interested in sending to the front (you can run across to your own), so he avoids conflict. Later, a herd almost ran away from Mishka, frightened by a thunderstorm.
Chapter 4 There was a meeting of whites (Denikin, Alekseev) and Cossacks (Krasnov, Bogaevsky). The former oppose the alliance of the latter with the Germans, offer to unite the army. The meeting did not lead to an alliance; on the contrary, the parties appeared estranged from each other. The Germans made a promise from the Don government about the neutrality of the latter in the event of an attack by Czechoslovakia on Germany. The Don government is asking for help and assistance. All this was recorded in a letter that was distributed in Cossack circles and served as the basis for Krasnov's accusations of treason.
Chapter 5 Kornilov’s army retreated from Rostov to the Kuban. During this campaign, Eugene Listnitsky was wounded twice. In one of the respects in the advancement of the army, he secured a vacation for himself, but remained in Novocherkassk and did not go home. Comrade Gorchakov invited him to visit. He lived with his wife Olga in a small house, so he was ready to accept a friend. Eugene really liked Olga. The Gorchakovs wanted to retire, but Listnitsky still didn’t move, it was all about his friend’s wife. Once he confessed his love to her, she resolutely refused, saying that they were only friends. Eugene agreed, but in the soul did not leave feelings, secretly suffered. Vacation ended, Olga spent them. And she didn’t see her husband anymore; he was killed. Gorchakov entrusts Listniki with taking care of his wife. Eugene himself patted her life: in the next battle he was wounded, he had to take his hand away. Immediately after discharge from the infirmary, he proposed to Olga. She agreed. Listnitsky decided not to fight anymore and take his wife to his parents' house, and break off relations with Aksinya. Father and servant joyfully greet the young, Olga notes the vicious beauty of Aksinya. The presence of the young wife made everyone in the house carefully monitor themselves. Father talks with Eugene about Aksinya, believes that she needs to leave. She agrees.
Chapter 6 Mishka Kosheva has served as an atarist for two months now, and has studied horses well. For exemplary behavior, he is sent to the village. On the way, Kosheva meets Stepan Astakhov, eagerly asks about his fate. Stepan was wounded, captured, is now returning home. He asks about Aksinya.
Chapter 7 The Tatar farm lived in the troubles of both the household and the military. The arrival of Stepan stirred up all the inhabitants. Pantelei Prokofievich immediately invited him to visit. There Astakhov said that he was going to live in a farm, to restore the economy. At first he lay down in the apartment of Anikushka’s wife, and then sent her with some kind of assignment. Pantelei Prokofievich guessed what was behind Aksinya. But she refused to go. Stepan himself went. But his humiliated and miserable condition aroused "black pride" in Aksinya, she again refused. But after receiving the calculation from the Listnicki she nevertheless returned to her husband’s house.
Chapter 8 The Cossacks encountered the retreating Reds in battle. Those were heroic, commissars marched ahead. The battle began, in which the Reds sang. The fire of the Cossacks forced them to retreat, but they departed in an organized manner. In one of the busy farms, the Cossacks stopped for the night. Captured several reds.
Chapter 9 Gregory was interested in the Bolsheviks, he tried to understand what led them to the Don. In process of military operations Melekhov was penetrated with malice towards the Reds. So it was with everyone, because there was more robbery and fewer prisoners (they immediately killed). Regarding the first Gregory was strict to his hundred, did not allow. Once, Pantelei Prokofievich and Daria come with a cart. The father asks his son about the situation at the front and about the service. Grigory was demoted to a platoon, Pantelei Prokofievich was indignant at this. Anxiety interrupted the conversation, but turned out to be false. Pantelei Prokofievich says that he was in the hundreds of Peter, where the eldest son gave him the loot. He came to the youngest for the same. Gregory was angry, conscience does not allow him to take. Soon, the son leaves for the outpost. And the father takes everything that is possible from the mistress of the house where Grigory stayed.
Chapter 10 The war, albeit rather sluggish, provoked strong rejection among the Cossacks. But the newspapers were filled with bravura lines about the successes of the Cossacks and Cadets. Then the Reds went on the offensive, bloody battles began. Once, an artillery officer asked Gregory to spend the night, who chatted and predicted the end of the Don army. Melekhov understood that the end was near. And fled home.
Chapter 11 In Novocherkassk, they expect a mission of the Powers of Concord. They were greeted with a servile and exaggerated honor. In honor of the "ambassadors" they held an honorable dinner, where they promised help. But a week later the collapse of the front and arbitrariness began, a breakthrough was formed. Krasnov hoped for allies, but they agreed to help only financially.
Chapter 12 Alienation appeared among officers and ordinary Cossacks. That is why Peter Melekhov tried to please the subordinates and erase the line between himself and them. But he was going home. The rank and file already spoke of the commune, and the officers fled.
Chapter 13 Almost all the Cossacks from the Tatar farm ran away home. When Peter returned home, a military council began in the family. The elder brother offers men to leave, and women to stay on the farm. Daria, Natalya and Dunyashka refuse. Pantelei Prokofievich and Ilyinichna argue that someone should guard the house. Decide to follow Peter's plan. Ilyinichna is cooking on the road. Pantelei Prokofievich in the farm finds out that the Reds are very close. But suddenly Peter himself refuses his idea, because his wives are crying.
Chapter 14. On the Northern Front on the Don, a massive retreat that no one can stop.
Chapter 15 Refusal of retreat Pantelei Prokofievich returned the meaning of managing. While doing business in the courtyard, he learns from Aksinya that Stepan is sick, that he will not leave anywhere either. The Melekhovs hid their weapons hastily. Soon their relative drove on the way to the indent, persuaded to go. In parting, he promised to remind those who remained of their betrayal. Soon the horsemen showed up. These were the retreating Cossacks. To the Melekhovs came the wahmister, who asked for help to transport the gun. He was ready for much for the sake of property, his fuse forced the Cossacks to help.
Chapter 16. But here came the red ones. The Melekhovs one of them immediately shot a dog. The soldiers stood at the apartment of the Melekhovs. Daria and Ilyinichna feed the Red Army. They don’t like wooden spoons, they suspect that poison is sprinkled in food. With the “guests” were Pantelei Prokofievich, Ilyinichna, Gregory and Daria. A soldier shooting a dog provokes Gregory to conflict. Melekhov decided to give himself everything to protect his and family life. The Red Army shooter hints at insulting Natalia. But his boss finally helped bring out the insolent. The same boss apologized for his colleague in the morning and gave the children sugar.
Chapter 17 There are fights near the farm. The Melekhov brothers are afraid that they will take the horses. And Pantelei Prokofievich solved the problem in his own way, having arranged for them a “foot” one. No wonder he did so, the horses were taken from the neighbors, and the Melekhovs were left. Anikushka had a party of the Red Army, to which the Cossacks were invited. From the Melekhovs went Gregory, Peter and Daria. There is nothing to breathe in the house; everyone is drunk, soldering the master's wife. The Red Army boasted of success. Gregory suspected that they were looking at him with suspicion, he was alert and stopped drinking. And the wife of Christoni dragged him to dance in order to warn that they wanted to kill Melekhov as an officer. He tells Daria to lead Peter home and is going to himself. He is stopped by the Red Army soldier, but Gregory breaks out, throwing the enemy over himself, and runs off to the farmhouse, where he spends the night in a haystack.
Chapter 18. The front moved away from the farm. They appointed another gathering. On it, young Cossacks laugh at the only old man, Avdeich Brech. Gregory met with Mishka Koshev and Ivan Alekseevich. Melekhov says that for his fight with the Red Guard, they took all his belongings from home. At the gathering they say that it is necessary to surrender weapons. They also chose a farm power - Ivan Alekseevich and Koshevoy.
Chapter 19. There were rumors in the farms that reprisals had begun against officers who opposed the Reds. Cossacks discussed the news and drank moonshine in the evenings. But Pantelei Prokofievich said that he has rifles and a machine gun, which he had hidden for a long time. Then a rumor came that executions were ongoing. Peter decided to go to Jacob Fomin and find out everything. On the trip they give butter, vodka, tea and a piece of fabric to appease the former co-worker. Jacob assured Peter that he would not be touched. Meanwhile, Pantelei Prokofievich went to matchmaker Korshunov. Miron G. criticizes the authorities, he says that he will put all his strength to expel the Bolsheviks. The power of his economy went out, so his whole life was also hindered.
Chapter 20. In the district revolutionary committee Mishka Kosheva, Ivan Alekseevich and police officer Olshanov. Gregory Melekhov came. In a conversation, he admits that he does not like either the Reds or the Cossacks. He argues with Koshev and asks what the Bolsheviks give to the Cossacks. The bear is angry, and Ivan Alekseevich advises keeping thoughts to himself. Throwing Melekhov is not understood. He leaves, and Kosheva admits that with such conversations Gregory causes hatred in him.
Chapter 21 Still, the cattle from the Melekhovs were taken away on the cart. Gregory went with her. He kept wondering where the truth was. Melekhov dozed off, saw Axinho in a dream. A knock on a nearby cart with corpses woke him up.
Chapter 22. The revolutionary committee and the farm were divided by an invisible wall of estrangement. It was dangerous for the Bolshevik farmers to even walk with their bare hands. Bear Kosheva believes that it is necessary to arrest the dangerous. After some time, an order came to impose rich houses on indemnities. And then they order to write a list of dangerous for the Soviet government. And so, soon the arrested Cossacks sat on the oaks in the courtyard of Mokhov. Miron G. immediately prepared as if to die. The Cossacks were taken away. And then Shtokman arrived. He appeared to help organize power in the farm. Ivan Alekseevich and Mishka took the guest to his old apartment, where they talked for a long time. And at night, Ivan Alekseevich found out that the arrested Cossacks were shot. He runs to Shtokman for explanations, and he believes that everything is done correctly, enemies should be exterminated.
Chapter 23. Lukinichna came to the Melekhovs and told her daughter Natalia that her father was shot. She begs Peter to get the bodies of the slain. He hesitated, but agreed. One friend volunteered to help for moonshine. It was difficult to get to the right place, Peter cursed everything in the world. Finally, they found, with difficulty, they dragged the heavy old man. Moonshine was drunk with an assistant together, then Peter brought Miron Grigoryevich home.
Chapter 24. The Cossacks were unhappy with the new regime, some believed that they wanted to destroy them. One of the gatherings at the Tatar farm gathered a lot of people, they promised to distribute the property of the escaped merchants to the poor. Before the meeting, Shtokman had to speak with a representative of the okrug, who was about to arrest his interlocutor for giving confiscated fur coats to passing units of the Red Army. Shtokman explained that he gave for a while, and the soldiers were almost undressed. But the district did not let up, Shtokman brought a Mauser to him, he immediately ran away. At the meeting, Shtokman wanted to get a "heart-to-heart talk", he did it. Cossack Alyoshka Shamil honestly said that the Bolshevik authorities are ready to shoot and avenge the Cossacks, the executed farmers died in vain. Shtokman began to read the list, which describes the reasons for the execution. They did not agree with this, but the speaker persuaded. And the property of those fleeing refused flatly.
Chapter 25. Gregory arrived, the Revolutionaries are going to arrest him. At the same time, the Melekhovs want to conduct a search, suspecting that they did not surrender all their weapons. The bear is sent for Gregory. Kosheva returns with nothing, Melekhov went to his aunt. But nobody was found there either.
Chapter 26. Immediately upon his return, Gregory went back. Father was arrested, the same danger hung over him. He was hiding with a distant relative.
Chapter 27. Members of the farm revolutionary committee decided to join the party. On the way, they hunted hares. There is vanity in the revolutionary committee, because in Kazan and Elanskaya it is restless. And then shots were heard nearby. The farmers need to leave soon. But in the Tatar they were immediately attacked, Koshevo got a pitchfork in the side. He woke up in the courtyard of Stepan Astakhov, he allowed him to spend the night. With difficulty, Mishka then came home, his mother begs him to leave. But Kosheva has no idea where and where all of her own are.
Chapter 28. The news of the uprising brought Gregory out of captivity. He learned the details from a relative.Melekhov hurriedly goes home, now everything is decided, and he is not looking for the truth.
Chapter 29. Bear Kosheva got to his own. At first they did not believe him, but then Shtokman appeared, explained everything at the outpost.
Chapter 30. In the farm Tatar mobilization. Only Stepan Astakhov is reluctant to go, but he is also forced to enroll in a hundred. But to suppress the uprising is a punitive detachment. The commander, Peter Melekhov, sends intelligence, led by his brother. And she stumbles upon a few punitive. The Cossacks defeated the Reds. They captured commander Likhachev, he was tormented by captivity and wished for death. But the next morning he was sent to Veshenskaya.
Chapter 31. Likhachev was taken to the rebel commander Suyarov. The prisoner is proud, they begin to interrogate him without a break. Likhachev was not shot, the rebels were against executions, they drove him to another place and crippled and hacked the guards along the way.
Chapter 32. The uprising was expanding. Kudinov began to command, but in reality he simply claimed what the Cossack hundreds themselves did. Near Tatarsky the battle will begin soon. While the Cossacks are just talking. Then the shelling began. Peter is invited to send fifty to the rear in red, he agrees, at the head puts Gregory. But the fervor of the enemy ceases, the red revel in.
Chapter 33. Gregory captured the convoy of the Reds. But it turned out that they did not retreat and went around, suddenly struck hundreds of Peter. The Cossacks descended into the yar, trying to escape and shoot. Some managed to escape, but some nevertheless ended up in a row with Melekhov. Then they called Petra, it was Mishka Kosheva, offering to surrender. Melekhov was against, but the Cossacks began to surrender without permission. The last one he got out. Kosheva shot him as a commander. And they chopped up the rest.
Chapter 34. The Melekhov’s mountain, from him Gregory could not even spend the night at home, ordered the delivery of the dead and went to Christon. Waiting for a cart in the morning, he recalled them with Peter as a child. So they brought a brother. Gregory held on and ordered. Ilyinichna turned pale and fell into the hands of Pantelei Prokofievich. Dunyashka voiced, but was able to drag Daria, beating in hysterics. After the preparation for the funeral began.
Chapter 35. Gregory was appointed commander of the Veshensky regiment. The regiment took Karginsky, seized weapons, people from the surrounding villages joined the regiment. And the prisoners Melekhov order to drive away, but no further than the mound (to recover).
Chapter 36. Gregory was sent from the headquarters an order and a warning about the inadmissibility of his cruelty. He arbitrarily took the village. Once he interrogated a red Cossack, then ordered to kill him, but he thought it over and regretted it. A military council soon passed, at which the majority adhered to the idea that a defensive war should be waged and not attack. Gregory decided that the front will remain in this place, will not go further, but will not recede either.
Chapter 37. Gregory did not know how to lead from the side, he led into battle and was in the thick of things. However, his tactics were intuitively present, he attacked in different ways. And then another battle. Opponents run towards each other, Gregory recognizes a friend among the Bolsheviks. He applies a special technique to him - he suddenly cuts to the left. The Cossacks began to retreat, the Reds did not pursue.
Chapter 38. The uprising was getting bigger. If you do not stop him, the rebels will unite with the whites. But the rebels fought with enthusiasm, there were no cartridges, but they were made by themselves, for this they carried all the lead. But not all areas participated in the uprising. Kudinov called Melekhov to a meeting. When Gregory came in, the commander spoke with a messenger from one farm who asked for help in the uprising. But the farm Cossacks themselves were not in a hurry to speak, because they refused the envoy. Kudinov introduces Melekhov to Georgidze. The meeting begins, at which they drew up a plan for further action. After him, Melekhov began talking with Kudinov about Georgidze, the first was dissatisfied with the potential resumption of the old order. The commander, however, believes that the Cossacks have nowhere to go except for joining the whites. This leads Gregory to sad thoughts. They spend the night at an old woman who boldly asks Melekhov about whether the war will end soon.
Chapter 39. The Bolsheviks who escaped from the Tatar farm were pinned to one of the red regiments. Then they headed for the squad. They brought their attention-grabbing Cossack Old Believer with a children's face and beard. Shtokman spoke to them. The Old Believer speaks of injustice and reprisals by the Bolsheviks. His interlocutor claims that the information will be verified, and if confirmed, the abusers will be punished. In parting, Mishka Kosheva tells the Cossack that he spoke with the red general, they are leaving beautifully.
Chapter 40. It turned out that there was no squad. But Shtokman, Ivan Alekseevich and Mishka Kosheva decided to join another unit. They are part of the infantry and soon sent to the next battle. Shtokman speaks to a nearby Red Army man, this man is not afraid to go into battle, because he is a communist. And so the battle began.
Chapter 41. Karginskaya - a stronghold of the rebels. Luck was on their side. Gregory had a plan to defeat the enemy, and he succeeded, chopped up the Reds. These days, Melekhov began to drink to drown the inner torment. It was already the fifth day of the booze when they gathered for one woman who brewed moonshine and was good by herself. Many Cossacks gathered in her house, and a party began. By morning, the Cossacks had already begun talking about their dissatisfaction with the appearance of whites in the rebel ranks. But Gregory cuts off the conversation on this subject. He got drunk, the hostess laid him down. Soon the others settled down.
Chapter 42. Melekhov understood that the booze was arranged to knock him out for a coup. He advised the instigators to remain silent about their thoughts. And after that, he drank and walked around the farms for two more days. But even while lying next to another woman, he recalled Aksinya.
Chapter 43. A violent uprising scorched all the participants; they also lived - one day. Often they left home, the command was afraid of desertion during field work.
Chapter 44. In the battle near Klimovka, the advantage was on the side of the Reds, then Gregory introduced a reserve with which he rode. Melekhov is in the thick of things, he jumps right on the machine gun, passes it, and already about the second he is stopped. But Gregory rushes about and is eager to fight with the Reds. People understand that he is ill, with a seizure.
Chapter 45. Gregory surrendered command and went to Veshenskaya with orderly Prokhor Zykov. They hunt along the way. Veshenskaya immediately began to drink, without even going to the headquarters. The owner of the house is familiar to Melekhov, he complains about the abuse of the rebels. Hearing about this, Gregory immediately went to the prison. At first they did not let him in, then they recognized him and were forced to yield to the threats. Melekhov released prisoners. Kudinov came out to him, trying to reason with him. Gregory claims that the staff behind the front do arbitrariness and are not useful. He calms down, still headed home.
Chapter 46. The farm was bored without Cossacks, they fought far, only on Easter came almost half a hundred. And again the battles of the Cossacks with the Red Army began. Meanwhile, Gregory arrived home. Almost immediately we went with Natalya to visit my mother-in-law. An economy without Miron Grigoryevich comes to desolation, Lukinichna asks her son-in-law to sow her. Not right away, but he agrees. Spouses go to grandfather Grishak, he began to read the Scriptures all the time and speaks Church Slavonic. Grandfather condemns the war, reads the prophecies from the Bible to Melekhov. Gregory and Natalia return silently. The wife severely met her husband, she heard rumors about Gregory's partying. He replies that much can be forgiven because he walks around the edge. And the whole war is in vain. But Melekhov himself did not have pity. But they are reconciled, they are united by rain. After a while, Daria approaches Gregory. The widow recovered, she jokingly pestering him, which amuses both.
Chapter 47. The red commander Voronovsky surrendered to the rebels. And he was going to give up with the regiment, but with the best conditions for them. The rebel command agrees, but it has been decided to itself that the regiment will be disarmed, driven to farms, and those who remain will be scattered in hundreds. It is especially good if the Communists are surrendered, they are driven especially carefully.
Chapter 48. In one of the battles, the rebels severely battered the Red Army, because they knew the area better. The Reds retreated. Ivan Alekseevich was wounded in a battle; he was brought out by Mishka Kosheva. The regiment, where there were communists from Tatar, connected with the one that was going to surrender to the white (see chapter 47). Shtokman immediately noticed the counter-revolutionary sentiments, but they can’t do anything at headquarters, under the influence of the majority. While Shtokman is asked to keep his guesses secret. But he sends Bear with a message to Ust-Khoperskaya.
Chapter 49. In the regiment of the uprising. The rally begins. Shtokman speaks at it, but they kill him without letting him finish. Ivan Alekseevich disarmed. The rally is interrupted by hundreds of rebels who have appeared.
Chapter 50. Gregory lived at home only five days, doing farm work, but was about to leave when he was replaced by Pantelei Prokofievich. Before leaving, he meets Axinho. He admits that he cannot forget her. She answers the same. Melekhov postpones departure, Pantelei Prokofievich notices a conversation with Astakhova, but gives no sign. And Aksinya, having come home, looked in the mirror, thought about Gregory and began to cry. Her feelings needed a little push. She calls Daria to her through Daria. He leaves, waiting for Natalia to fall asleep with her children.
Chapter 51. Not very convincing, but Gregory could explain to Natalia his absence. Melekhov was leaving, realizing that the soul was the same yearning. Apparently, even Aksinya cannot obscure her. On the way, he meets a cart with killed farm Cossacks. Gregory is told how they died. A conversation begins about the saints and their connection with the Cossacks. Despite such high topics, the dead are loose. Melekhov goes further. He received a letter from Kudinov about the surrender of the regiment, he also said that they took farm communists. Upon learning of this, Gregory surrenders command and jumps to rescue Mishka and Ivan Alekseevich.
Chapter 52. Voronovsky, who surrendered the regiment, is told that his people must be disarmed. The traitor realizes that he is now a prisoner. Former Red Army soldiers also understand this. Those who refuse to disarm are mercilessly chopped. And the Communists will be driven to the farms so that the people will judge them themselves.
Chapter 53. An airplane took off at Singing Farm, which frightened all residents. In one of those who arrived, they recognized Peter Bogatyrev, who had retreated with the whites. It appeared by chance, with an order from the Don government to establish contact with the rebels.
Chapter 54. Ivan Alekseevich was in the convoy. He understood that if there was no trial, then they would be finished. They were immediately beaten and mocked by the guards. Then they began to beat on the farms. One communist suggested saying goodbye. Some felt sorry for the prisoners, but most were refined in cruelty. Ivan Alekseevich only hoped that he would not be killed in his farm in front of his family. Prisoners are given to drink from the mold trough.
Chapter 55. Secretly from everyone, the rebel command entered into an alliance with the whites.
Chapter 56. But the prisoners were driven to Tatar. They were expected, especially local communists, to ride for the first battle in which they killed, including Peter Melekhov. Ivan Alekseevich understood that he couldn’t go further, he examined the crowd, if there was a wife and a son there, and if there was, I wanted to ask them to be taken away. Here the gaze of Ivan Alekseevich intersects with the gaze of Daria. She accuses him of the death of her husband, he replies that in the answer is Kosheva (that was still not the case with the prisoners). Suddenly, Daria someone gave a gun, she killed Ivan Alekseevich. And others finished it off, it became a signal for the beginning of the massacre. Gregory did not have time to save. He arrived an hour later. At home, weeping Dunyasha met, who spoke about Daria. Ilyinichna was afraid to spend the night with the killer, she went to the neighbor, and the “heroine” herself, drunk, slept in the barn. This incident plunged Gregory into shock; he left that very night.
Chapter 57. The Reds could not go on the offensive. First, they underestimated the uprising, and then the Cossacks began to help the whites. But by the spring of 1919 the Reds began to drive the rebel regiments. In a short respite, Gregory went to a meeting with Kudinov.
Chapter 58. Before the arrival of Melekhov, Kudinov was cutting a fly. And he told his subordinate that the rebel’s affairs were bad: the red press, the white have their own plans. Gregory reacted indifferently, he did not hurt his soul for the uprising, considering any outcome unfavorable. Kudinov tells how strange Georgidze was killed. And then he says that with the worst possible outcome, the army must make a breakthrough, abandoning everything. Melekhov is given a note from a Red Army newspaper where the rebels turned out to be white helpers. Gregory does not like this comparison, but he admits that it is so. But he is in the same indifferent state. The hero is going to take Axinho with him, and leave his family at home. He writes a letter to his beloved, punishing him to come to him.
Chapter 59. The rebels began to retreat, followed by the population. Handed the letter to Aksinie and the order of the Melekhov family Prokhor Zykov. To return back to his unit, I had to make a savvy: find the commander and not get into battle. He went with the refugees. Among them are a sick officer who needs to cover himself and an old man who takes his property to a distant ferry, just to get over. And the owner does not want to throw anything. Then he got a pig, a sick officer asks him to cut it so as not to scream. The old man does not agree for a long time, but he is forced to. Then Prokhor comes across a Cossack woman looking for a sick husband. Many young Cossacks escaped from units. Refugees drive slowly. Away the fire.
Chapter 60. On the bridge, representatives of nonresident squads check the carts. Young Cossacks sent to the front. They detained about fifty deserters, some resisted. Congestion formed. Zykov drove freely, he had a document. In Bazki he began to wait for his own. There he saw Axinho, she nevertheless came. The old men invited Prokhor to drink, he immediately agreed. He is not only treated, but also promised to give grains. With grain Prokhor hardly went to the horse, but the bull kicked him, he fell and fell asleep. An unfamiliar retreating regiment woke him. Zykov could not find either a rifle or a horse. The crossing was slow, among the refugees talking about the Reds, they scolded the Cossacks who had left the front. Skip forward the messenger sent to the commander, among the refugees his mother, in a conversation he confirmed that the red burned houses only of the rich.
Chapter 61. After crossing the rebel units, they were scattered around the farms. Gregory traveled around his division and went to spend the night in Veshenskaya. Reds fired from the other side. At the meeting, Melekhov expressed the idea that it is necessary to protect places especially suitable for crossing. And he was right, soon the potential place became famous. Gregory drove Tula, while inspecting the positions under him, a horse was killed. And in this difficult time, the Cossacks in that place lived with their wives, discipline collapsed. Melekhov ordered them to be taken home.
Chapter 62. Aksinya arrived in Veshenskaya and stopped at her aunt, but still could not wait for Gregory. Finally, Prokhor came for her and told her to gather for her lover. Astakhova was in such a hurry that Zykov began to choke, silently swore Melekhov’s connection and was afraid that he himself would get from Natalya for aiding. But Aksinya and Gregory met, and Prokhor left them.
